Tourism in Charleston

Travel and Leisure magazine rated Charleston as one of the five best cities in America, but ask a local and they will happily tell you they should be number one.  Charleston is one of the oldest cities in the country and it is rich in local pride and history.  Charleston is also a tourist town where millions of visitors come each year to check out the local sites, hit the beaches and of course try out some of the best food on the east coast.

History in  Charleston

Charleston has the distinction of being a prominent destination in two wars, it was occupied in both Revolutionary and American Civil wars. It was a popular destination for pirates to loot, it had been burned to the ground and it’s been in the path of more than one hurricane.  To call Charleston resilient is a major understatement.

When you come to Charleston and tour downtown you might think you’re in a European city, the downtown was made for pedestrians.  You can spend some time in antique stores, art galleries, stop and people watch in a coffee house and of course try out some of the amazing restaurants.  There are small quaint shops all over downtown where you can find everything from hand rolled cigars to cupcakes.

Things to Do

Charleston is a beach town, one of the reasons tourists flock here every year is to check out the beaches.  You can lay around soaking up the sun and catching a few waves of any of the amazing beaches all over the area.  If you’d rather catch some fish then you can do that too.  Get on one of the many deep sea fishing charters that are readily available.  Spend the day on the open ocean trying to land the big one.  There are loads of tourist attractions and things to do, I promise that you won’t be bored.

The Food

Charleston has some fantastic restaurants from getting an inexpensive sandwich to high end dining.  But when you come here you must try the seafood.  Locally sourced it is fresh and delicious.  Here are the highlights of some of the best restaurants in town.

Charleston is a tourist town and each season there is a new crop of restaurants that open and close, it can make it hard to keep track of where to get good food.   The city offers every kind of cuisine imaginable no matter what you are craving.  But if you are really trying to impress that special someone then there are a couple of restaurants here in town that are sure to impress.  Let’s have a look at where you can get the best find dining experiences in Charleston.

Baker and Brewer

If you want a casual night of gourmet pizza and craft beers then the Baker and Brewer is sure to impress.  This is not your basic pepperoni pizza but you can get the freshest ingredients on a the Pork Trifecta paired up with a garden fresh salad.  There are tasty starters and fresh baked bread.  The craft beer is exclusive to the restaurant and you won’t find it anywhere else.  This place is perfect for a casual evening with friends.

Bourbon and Bubbles

This place is relatively new but it is a high end bar and restaurant.  It is the perfect place for a romantic dinner for two when you want to get away from it all and just be the two of you.  There are superb cocktails, a wide selection of champagnes and of course bourbon.  Try the orzo tots with gouda and basil aioli that is to die for!  This place is pricey so be prepared to spend, although you will make a great impression.

Maison

You simply cannot have fine dining without a French restaurant, it is like French people invented food.  If you want innovative French cuisine then Maison is the place to be.  It has a simple one page menu with French dishes you’re sure to recognize that are as visually appealing as they are delicious.  Try the foie gras with a toasted brioche.  If you palate is not ready for all that then there are several other dishes that you will love.  Of course there is a great selection of wines that will pair brilliantly with anything you order.

There is no shortage of restaurants to try in Charleston but when you’re trying to impress a date or a business contact then you want something a little better than a chain restaurant.  If you consider yourself a foodie then you are going to love this places too!
